Professional Bio

Shaista Aziz is a journalist, writer, and campaigner. She’s a columnist for Hypen and writes regularly for The Guardian, her writing has been published by The New York Times, The Times, CNN, Huffington Post, Gal-dem, Globe and Mail and more. She’s a regular commentator on race, identity, and women’s rights, for broadcast media including Sky News, BBC News, LBC, Times Radio and others. Shaista presented a critically acclaimed BBC TV documentary on what it means to be young, French and Muslim, following the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack. Shaista has spent more than twenty years working as a senior media and communications specialist for international aid organisations including Oxfam, Save the Children and MSF, Doctors Without Borders. She has extensive experience of working with refugees and people displaced by war, conflict and the climate crisis and has worked extensively across the Middle East, East and West Africa and Pakistan including the countries borders with Afghanistan and tribal belt. In 2021, together with two friends, Shaista launched a viral anti-racism platform and campaign calling on the Football Association (FA), the government and tech companies to tackle racism following the abuse inflicted on three Black England players at the Euros final at Wembley against Italy. The Three Hijabis campaign has secured more than 1.2 million signatures for change, a commitment from the government to implement change, and extensive national and international media coverage. The Three Hijabis are working with the Premier League to end gender based violence and developing their pilot podcast on sports, anti-racism, and activism with Spotify.
